Reese Quote

Last night Reese wanted to read her Dora Christmas book that she "likes to play like a horn."
(It is shaped like a Christmas tree so why wouldn't you play it like an instrument and why not read it in August when it is 108 degrees outside.  Don't judge.)
Well at the end it says "Feliz Navidad!"  So, of course, I started singing while we went to brush our teeth.  Then Reese took over with this lyric "Feliz Navidad, You will not marry me on Christmas."
I shot toothpaste out my nose I laughed so hard.

Phew...

I think I am caught up from this summer. I am blaming everything on the heat these days so it is going to take the wrap for me being blog-lazy for a couple months. Now I need to catch up on my crochet projects and read a cozy mystery or two.

I have no idea why this picture isn't rotated but I don't have it in me to try to fix it.
Where is the ice cream?

Flashlight Tour at the DBG

A couple weekends ago, Reese and I headed to the Desert Botanical Gardens to attend a Flashlight Tour.  We arrived a little after it started at 7pm and it was still over 100 degrees.  We saw an owl, a turtle, and a snake.  Reese was able to do some crafts and we walked a lot.  A little after 8pm (bedtime), Reese look at me said "It's really dark, Mom.  And my feet are tired."  So, she hopped on for a piggy-back ride and we stopped for an ice cream cone on the way home.

It was a fun night out just the two of us!

Reese Quotes

Doesn't everybody make fairy crowns out of paper-towel rolls?

We have all of the characters from The Wizard of Oz in Happy Meal doll form which Reese has been playing with lately.  She bought be one from the Lollipop Guild and said "Hey Mom, this is Lollipop Jim."

We were laying on the floor in the living room coloring the other night and I heard something so I looked up.  Reese said "That's just my foot banging on the floor." Like she had no control over it at all.

Juince, like apple juince that you drink.  Has an "N" in it.

We were talking about who we wanted to meet the next time we go to Disneyland tonight and I said maybe we could eat at Ariel's Grotto, where we could eat and see all the princesses.  Reese asked if we could meet mermaids too and I said "of course."  Then she asked about Flounder, to which I said "I don't know." Then she looked at me with a scared face and said "Will we meet the dreaded Ursala?"

Sad to see them go...

I met Debbie at the Irish Cultural Center while taking Irish Step Dance Classes.  We always chatted together during class and kept in touch trying new resturants around town.  Debbie and Jesse were married in May, it was Reese's first wedding.  We have had them over for dinner a couple times and Jesse is wonderful with Reese.

I'm sad to say that Debbie and Jesse are moving to England where Debbie was able to get a job and Jesse is going to work on his PhD.  I really hope that Reese and I are able to get over there to visit but for now, I am just sad to not have such good friends close by any longer.

Sienna's Gymnastics Birthday Party

In July, Reese was invited to Sienna's birthday party.  Sienna was in Reese's spring preschool class and her summer camp class.  I wasn't sure that we would be able to go or if I would be up to it but when it came to that week, everything fell into place so that we could go and Reese was super excited.

Reese was a natural!  The teachers kept asking if she had done gymnastics before and I had to say no.  They kept saying "she is fearless you have to bring her back."  Which meant I was stressed the entire time and she loved it.

Reese asks all the time when we can go to Sienna's birthday party again.  The gym does have open hours so I think we may have to check them out sometime.  It was fun to see her so naturally good at gymnastics and having so much fun with her friends!

Mission Impossible: Indiana

At the end of June, Reese and I attempted to head back to Indiana to celebrate Annie and Dan's wedding and the 4th of July. We headed to the airport after a day at work and preschool for a 6:30pm flight to Midway but ended up just spending six hours at the airport and not going anywhere. The runway lights went out at Midway so we got on the plane and sat there then had to get off the plane and wait for them to cancel our flight. Reese had a little meltdown after we had to get off the plane but I knew everyone who were on our flight was feeling the same way and given the time, it was what it was. I waited for luggage and called Matt, who thankfully came to get us and take us home. Between my dad and I calling Southwest, we found out that the only thing we could do was go to the airport in the morning with our fingers crossed. I let Reese sleep in and thankfully Lani was able to take us back to the airport, where the woman at ticketing told me "I should have gotten there earlier." To which I replied "But I am here now, and I will go anywhere as long as we get to Chicago by tomorrow afternoon (for the Anderson's wedding party)." She was able to put us on stand-by for a flight that went through Minneapolis and we rushed to the gate. As we stood there waiting to see what would happen, I heard my name over the loud-speaker to go to another gate. A flight to Chicago had one seat available and they wanted to give it to me, but I had Reese. The woman told me to wait and she became my angel by getting Reese and I boarding passes to the Minneapolis flight. And we were off... When we made it to Chicago, we couldn't find our luggage but we decided to head back to my Dad's house and figure out luggage later. My dad ended up driving back to the airport that night, while a storm hit and I juggled two sleeping and scared little girls. It was not a smooth start to our trip but we were there and Reese was so happy to see my Dad and Sophia!

Good Morning our first day full day in Indiana!

The sunhat that I made for Sophia!

Ready to go to Annie and Dan's Wedding Celebration

Sunday we drove out to the Indiana Dunes where my Mom and Marc were camping in their new trailer.  We walked down to the beach where the girls swam and played in the sand.  We made Sophia walk most of the way, which meant it took us forever but Sophia got some exercise :)
A storm was coming in so we quickly walked back to the camp site and made it back just in time.  We changed and ate dinner then headed back to my Dad's house.  It was wonderful to be out in the green trees and be able to be outside.

After dinner, my dad and I took an after-dinner walk around the neighborhood, Bella and all.

Monday night Annie and Dan came into town to spend some quality time with us.  We had dinner at Kathy's house and then Reese and Uncle Kent headed over to the playground across the street.  She has Ken wrapped around her little finger and they had a great time playing, despite the crazy heat.

Good morning, Sophia!

Playing outside for a little bit because there was a heat wave.

Naptimes have been interesting because Sophia wants to be held the entire time and Reese doesn't want to have to stay in her bed if Sophia doesn't have to.  So, Sophia has slept in my arms in the recliner while Reese naps on her Dora couch right next to us.  I have been able to enjoy the quite and read a book, which has been really nice.

We headed to stay the night at my Mom's on the 3rd and were able to attend the Twilight Parade in Highland.  It was very hot but we had a good time.

Abe met us there and Reese loved spending time with Daddy Abe.

The 4th of July, Marc made biscuits and gravy so the day started out well.  Then we took Reese to see Brave at the movies and came home to nap.  Next, it was sprinkler time and backyard baseball.  I see sports in Reese's future.

Highland fireworks with Mom, Marc, Reese, Sophia, Daddy Abe and his cousin (I can't remember his name).  The glow bracelets I bought were a hit while we waited for them to start.

The next day we played at my dad's house and watched as a rain storm came through.

Silly Sophie!

Reese dusting the "Jungle" :)

Family came into town on our last night so we went over to China Koon, where Reese knew exactly what she wanted, a pink smoothie.  She even ordered it herself and was very proud.  It was adorable!

Our last walk in Indiana was on the bike trail by my Dad's house.  It ended in Reese having an accident but it was hot and Bella wasn't going to make it so I think it was the universe telling us to go home.

It was very hard leaving everyone we love, especially Sophia.  The girls played so nicely together and I know Reese loved having her little sister around.  Though it started out a little rough, I know both Reese and I needed this week away from home and surrounded by people we love.

How did this happen?

Reese is getting so big so fast!  Let me count the ways:

1. Literally, she has gotten so tall that she doesn't fit under the kitchen counters any more.

2. She can write her "R"s.  They started upside-down and backwards but they have turned around and she is writing them on everything now.

3. The past couple of nights she has been getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night so that she doesn't go in her pull-up and then is waking up completely dry.  I'm not sure when all of that is supposed to happen but I haven't been pushing it because there always seems to be a lot of change happening.  It seems to be happening all on its own. (As I knock on wood)

4. She does so many things all by her self now: puts on her shoes and socks, buttons (it takes a while but she can do it), dressed and undressed (and she knows to look for the tags or the letters to know which way is the back)

5. She can count to 30.  Okay, okay, sometimes we jump from 16 to 19 and the late 20s get a little messy sometimes but she was counting letters for Lani this weekend and went straight through with no mess ups!  Then, I realized it and had to make a big deal so now she is counting everything.

6. Her hair is out of control.  It tucks into her underwear after it curls, not just when I brush it.  We will need to cut it sometime but we have crossed a line and I don't know if I will be able to.  Lots of braids lately.  I am happy to say the Princess "Aleia" buns held up better than I thought they would this weekend so I see them in our future.

7. She looks like a kid now, instead of a toddler.  Her chubby little cheeks are going away and when I look at pictures of her when she first came to AZ, I see how much she has changed in the past seven months.  And then I cry.

Payson Adventure

Saturday morning Reese and I headed to the Hudson family cabin in Payson with Lani and her dog, Penny.  We got there and settled then picked up sandwiches and headed to the creek to enjoy the beautiful outdoors.

Arizona has had a lot of monsoons over the past couple of weeks so the creek was higher than normal but we enjoyed splashing around, throwing stones and just being outside.

It looked like another storm was on its way towards us so we headed back to the cabin for naptime.  I think I needed it more than Reese did.

Post naptime, we did some coloring and picked up Sonic for dinner.  Reese loved the banana shake that I ordered and must be in a growth spurt because she ate almost everything in sight this weekend.  We watched Fantastic Mr. Fox and played hide and seek before bedtime.

Sunday morning, we got ready and headed down to Greenway Park (?) where Reese played on the playground and Lani found the first of three caterpillars that looked like this.  When I was little and we used to go camping at Potato Creek, we would call these wooly worms.

 Snack time by the lake

Then we moved over to a grassy area away from the lake so we could play with the big yellow ball.

 Reese and Penny

Lastly, we dropped Penny at the cabin and went for lunch at the Payson Airport.  I had never been before but it was perfect.  Reese was awesome, eating a ton of her "Bear Cake" or pancake, watching the planes and coloring.  We even were able to ask a pilot where he was heading today (Roosevelt Lake).  After that we packed up and drove home.

It was much too quick but the weather was glorious with beautiful clouds.  It was 105 in Phoenix when we got back and I had to mow the lawn so I quickly remember why I am ready for fall.  I do love Arizona but this heat is slowly killing me.  It was nice to get away to Payson and enjoy the outdoors.  I am counting down the days until October.

I don't know much...

But I know that I have no idea what I am doing...

I know that is the essence of parenthood but some days it is just so overwhelming. Reese is having accidents at school, giant tantrums at home and is awful at listening. I know that I am hormonal and being too sensitive about this but today it just really seems like I have no idea what I am doing. I try to be strong and put on a front like I have a clue but really I am just making it up. Nobody said this was going to be easy and it isn't.

Don't get me wrong, it is all worth it and I would never go back. But I want to be able to look back at these days and remember them honestly.  And honestly, some days are just hard and overwhelming.

Crochet

Crocheting while watching a movie or show has been my go to for relaxing for the past couple of years.  I love that I can watch something take shape in my hands and I feel productive.  Most of what I make becomes a gift to someone but sometimes I am commissioned to make something. I have been on a hat kick for a while and I don't see any end in sight.  Here are some projects that I have worked on over the past couple of months:

A hat and booties made in exchange for babysitting
Sun hats for Maria's boys
A sun hat for Sophia
And one for Reese too

A commissioned wizard's hat
